11 Books That Were Instrumental to Reinventing My Life After Prison

One thing about prison is there’s plenty of time.

I used that time to reconnect with my love of reading, something I still make time for today.

Here are some of my favorite non-fiction books, but this list is not, by any means, all-inclusive.

These are the books I revisit often, and these are the books that had the most significant impact on my reinvention after prison.

“Meditations, Marcus Aurelius,” (Gregory Hays Translation)

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” (This is tattooed on my rib cage.)

“The Bhagavad Gita” (Stephen Mitchell Translation)

“Serenity, gentleness, silence, benevolence, self-restraint, purity of being, compassion — this is control of the mind.”

“The Tao te Ching,” Lao Tzu (Stephen Mitchell Translation)

“If you realize that all things change,
there is nothing you will try to hold on to.
If you aren’t afraid of dying,
there is nothing you can’t achieve.”

“Mans Search For Meaning,” Viktor Frankl
