Do You Want to Connect With Your Calling? Your Childhood May Hold the Key
--
The best gift I ever received transformed into the best day of the month for me as a kid:
A subscription to Road & Track magazine.
I couldn’t wait to see what was on the cover, and I couldn’t wait to pour through the pages and memorize more stats:
- 0–60
- 1/4
- Top Speed
- Horsepower
I could recite this info for the cars I loved as if I was saying my own name.
I would study each issue as if the biggest test of my life was always around the corner.
Did I study the same way for school?
I laugh even as I type this.
I no longer subscribe to any of the magazines but regularly attend as many Cars and Coffee, Caffeine & Carburetors, and car shows as I can during the spring, summer, and fall.
I still light up when I see a car I love driving down the road, and I keep an eye on Bring A Trailer (auction site) to see what’s on the market.
Why do I do this?
Because it brings me joy and meaning.
There doesn’t need to be any other reasons beyond that.
Your joy and meaning are enough.
What did you obsess over as a kid?
What was it that when you engaged with it, the world disappeared, and it was just you and the thing you loved?
Baseball cards?
Fighter jets?
Dinosaurs?
Cartoons?
Boats?
When was the last time you even looked at the thing you loved?
If you feel something is missing from your life, the answer may be closer than you think.
- Make a list of what you loved doing as a kid
- Rank them
- Go to YouTube, search for your #1
- Allow yourself to fall down the rabbit hole
- Identify the next step on your adventure
- Schedule time for the next step
