Do you want a piece of your day back?
I did, and so I looked at how I was investing my time and what was causing me to feel a way I didn’t want to feel.
My phone came screaming to the forefront.
I noticed I was very reactionary, I wasn’t proactive or intentional in using my phone, and I noticed the terrible habit of picking the phone up if there was a second of “downtime.”
Waiting for a page to load on my laptop, waiting in line at the store, in between sets at the gym
Some of this behavior was out of “boredom” (I put that in quotes because that’s a whole other subject, this world is anything but boring).
Some of this behavior was driven by the desire to be productive,
“I’ve got a second; let me check my email.”
“Let me engage with that LinkedIn comment.”
“I need to be productive all the time.”
Prison taught me the beauty, depth, and richness of time — and it also taught me that I don’t want to invest that time staring at a 5-inch screen.
My phone is a tool, nothing more. However, the tool was using me, not the other way around.
