Here’s Why Chasing Titles and Money Won’t Provide Lasting Happiness
From an early age, we’ve been conditioned that one of life’s primary goals is to be happy.
Two of the paths we’ve been conditioned to pursue so we can be happy are:
- Chasing titles
- Chasing money
The sad fact is, we’ve been conditioned poorly.
Chasing titles and money provide short-term hits of happiness.
After the initial happiness wanes, we return to the level of happiness we felt before the new title and raise.
So if we’re miserable before, we’ll find ourselves right back to being miserable after the initial happiness wanes.
This phenomenon is known as hedonic adaptation.
This is why it’s a constant chase.
This is why it’s always more, more, more.
What if, instead of chasing happiness, we pursued meaning?
What if we invested a portion of our time engaged in activities that brought us significant meaning?
- Pursuing our calling
- Connecting to nature
- Being of service to others
- Hobbies we love but haven’t pursued in years
