The Key To Inner Peace Isn’t Retirement, It’s Purpose

Peace

I’ve heard this answer from so many people when discussing what they ultimately desire in their lives.

It takes a lot of questions and digging to get there, but when we do, everyone I’ve spoken to experiences a lightness of being when they discover what they desire.

It’s not about the corner office or the German sedan in the garage; it’s so much simpler than that.

And that’s why they feel light.

But they get their path to peace all twisted.

They believe they’ll experience peace when they retire and can do “nothing.”

They believe peace will come when they’re free from their career.

Sure, they’ll experience a modicum of peace from no longer having to deal with the commute, pointless meetings, and ridiculous office politics.

But that peace is fleeting; without something to invest their time into, they’ll feel empty, and life will be devoid of deep meaning.

The peace they desire is exponentially deeper than freedom from a career; they don’t need to wait for retirement to experience it.

The peace we desire in our second halves isn’t found sitting on a beach with a pina colada.
