What The Assembly Line Can Teach Us About Meaning and Fulfillment
Henry Ford’s assembly line roared to life on December 1, 1913.
It wasn’t the first assembly line ever produced; Ford took inspiration from slaughterhouses and grain mills.
It was, however, a revolution in the automotive industry.
The car’s chassis was pulled down the 150-foot line by a chain conveyor, and then 140 workers applied their assigned parts to the chassis.
Unlike other cars of the time, every Model T produced on Ford’s line used identical valves, gas tanks, tires, etc., so they could be assembled in a speedy and organized fashion.
Each worker had a specific component and was exceptionally well versed in that component.
Ford pumped out Model T’s at an incredible rate and lowered the cost of production, thereby making the car more accessible to the masses.
The assembly line was a game changer and completely transformed the world.
