So I’ve been putting together pieces of my writing process and the steps I took to create my memoir, “Blank Canvas, How I Reinvented My Life After Prison.”

It’s important to note, this was the last step I took before the manuscript went to my editor.
Here it is:
I read the entire manuscript out loud.
I wanted to put myself into the reader’s mind; I wanted to hear how the words landed. They may sound good in my head, but if they don’t land well in my ear, they need to be revised until they do.
I was also listening for anything that did not push the story forward; I was listening for where my ego was doing the writing and where I was using ten-dollar words when fifty-cent words would suffice.
Here’s how I did it:
First, I’d read one sentence. Then, if it landed well, I went on to the next.
